The speed of industrial development in Nepal is not as fast as expected. The political instability and many other factors are delaying the development projects and establishments of industries.We hope and wish that this situation won’t last longer and we believe that situations will change in coming years. Industrial sector contributes just about 10% to the GDP of the country. However, Without industrial development, the economic well-being of the nation is not attainable. There are several impediments to the industrial development in Nepal. Among the development of human resources is the vital one. So there will be a good future for Industrial Engineers in coming years once the nation will focus on development projects and rapid industrialization.
Nepal has recently entered into the World Trade Organization.This will provide new opportunities as well as challenges for industries and Industrial Engineers of Nepal. Our industries will face a competitive environment. To tackle new scenario, Nepal Needs skilled and qualified people to serve the industrial development sector as either skilled service providers or motivated entrepreneurs.They must be well equipped with technical, managerial and entrepreneurial skills. Industrial Engineering focuses on providing such skills and knowledge. Industrial Engineering is relatively new and not so popular branch of Engineering. Many students only think of civil engineering and electrical, electronic engineering after completing plus 2 in Nepal.
Realizing the country’s new challenges as well as opportunities, Institute of Engineering Thapathali Campus has started a four-year Bachelor of engineering course on Industrial Engineering for the first time in Nepal only a few years ago. The bachelor’s in Industrial Engineering course provide an opportunity to young Nepalese Students to obtain the background knowledge necessary to be a professional in a rapidly changing global economy as well as the developing techniques and trends in Industries around the globe. These engineers will be able to work in a variety of national and international industries like Hydropower and Renewable and Alternative Energy, Telecommunication, Food and Beverage, Manufacturing, Textiles, Pharmaceuticals, Automobile and Transportation, Biomedical Engineering, Production Management, Airlines sector, Industrial Management and Consulting Projects, etc.

Objectives of Industrial Engineering in Nepal
The objective of the course is to produce engineers interested in and capable of handling the challenges faced by the industrial sectors in technical as well as managerial aspects in Nepal. Graduate engineers will be entrepreneurs, managers, and technical experts and professionals to enhance the pace of industrial development in Nepal.

Course Structure for industrial Engineering in Nepal
The course has mainly following components:
Theory deals with the fundamentals required in basic science, technology and engineering subjects relevant to existing as well as prospective industries in Nepal. Subjects like Management, Hydropower, Renewable Energy, Biomedical technology, Automobile Technology, Refrigeration And Airconditioning, Maintenance Engineering, Production Technologies, etc which have future scope in Nepal as well as in international markets are dealt in this course.

Practical subjects develop the skills of the students in the engineering application. Theoretical knowledge will be applied in the practical training courses.

Project work will provide the students an opportunity to be intuitive, creative and develop skills to solve specific problems. A project report will be written by each student individually or jointly based on the project that has been completed and will be submitted to the department. One additional project will be on “Entrepreneurship Development” aspects. In this project each student has to develop a business plan incorporating legal, planning, project design, financial, technical, marketing aspects as well as managerial aspects.

On the Job Training (OJT) / Industrial Attachment will be of 15 weeks and students are sent to particular industry based on their interest and availability. It will be a part of the course. Based on availability, students could also be sent to foreign companies to have on the job training.

For Seminar Paper, each student has to select a related topic and present a research paper based on secondary information and it will be a part of the course.

This is a separate branch of Engineering and I see a good future of this course in near future.
