How to prepare for PTE writing module
The writing section of the PTE exam assesses your proficiency in English writing skills along with speaking, reading, and listening skills. After completing the speaking section, you will encounter two tasks that solely focus on testing your writing ability.
Overview of PTE Writing Module:
1. Summarize Spoken Text:
In this task, you will receive a paragraph that needs to be summarized in your own words within a single sentence using more than 75 words. You have 10 minutes to read, summarize, and proofread the paragraph.
2. Essay Writing:
The second task in this section requires you to write an essay of 200 to 300 words. You will be given a prompt consisting of one or two lines, and you must write an essay on the given topic within 20 minutes. Your essay is evaluated based on various aspects such as content, formal requirements, development, grammar, linguistic range, vocabulary, and spelling.
To improve your writing score, consider the following tips:
1. Focus on the key concept:
Identify the core topic of your prompt and maintain focus on it throughout your essay. Stick to the topic and keep your arguments concise. When reading the prompt, make rough notes of your key points before starting to write.
2. Plan a structure:
Divide your essay into three parts: introduction, argument, and conclusion. This structure helps you organize your content and stay within the word limit. Keep this structure in mind even while making notes.
3. Use examples or facts:
Incorporate examples, facts, or anecdotes to make your essay engaging and credible. These additions give your essay personality. If you have relevant information about the topic, utilize it fully. Include important dates, statistics, or names of personalities if they support your argument.
4. Use quotes or idioms:
Quotes, idioms, and catchy phrases can enhance your essay, but ensure they are appropriate for academic writing. Avoid colloquial language or slang. Including relevant quotes can give direction to your essay, but use them sparingly and only if they add value to your arguments.
5. Use comprehensible vocabulary:
Focus on using vocabulary that is easy to understand and doesn’t consume your word count. Ensure your writing style is not sloppy and pay attention to sentence formation. Use appropriate introductory phrases and conjunctions to convey your point seamlessly. Examples include “in my opinion,” “I believe,” “moreover,” “given the facts,” etc.
Improving your essay writing skills may take time, but with dedicated practice, it is achievable. Utilize resources such as Pearson’s PTE Academic Official Coursebooks and the online app, which provide writing prompts for practice.
Take practice tests and mock exams to quantitatively evaluate your performance. By combining these tips with consistent practice, you can enhance your PTE essay writing score.
