Microbiology is the study of the microbes, and their effect on human life. It is a vast field and contains sub branches like medical microbiology, food microbiology, agriculture microbiology, public health microbiology etc. It is a developing field in Nepal and much is needed to develop this sector. Microbiologists in Nepal are mainly involved in teaching, researches and health related projects. Mainly, medical microbiology, public health and food microbiology are popular among students in Nepal. You should have a masters or higher degree to get hold in this field.
Medical microbiology is concerned with prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. A medical microbiologist study the characteristics of pathogens, their mode of transmission, mechanism of infection and growth. They works as consultant for the physicians in hospitals, government health agencies, pharmaceuticals companies. They mainly remain involved in the researches. Public health microbiology deals with controlling epidemics and other communicable diseases in the communities. They often work with governments or project based organizations working for the control and prevention of diseases. Food microbiology is the study of microorganisms that inhabit, create or contaminate food. Food microbiologist perform various research and experiments determining safety and how to sustain it. They study food spoilage, poisoning, preservations and other food technology like fermentation, pasteurization, etc. They are often employed by food manufacturers, and quality control departments. Agriculture microbiology is associated with plant related pathogens and diseases related to plants and animal, and their effects on animal. Agricultural microbiologists work for government agencies, agricultural companies, and research organizations. Though all field are in developing phase in Nepal, comparatively medical microbiology is preferable due to its scope in research projects, hospitals and greater chances for abroad study opportunities. -
In the context of public health microbiology, food safety plays a crucial role, especially in the prevention of foodborne illnesses. Microorganisms in food can significantly affect public health, and addressing contamination at various stages—whether in medical, food, or agricultural microbiology—is essential. Regarding food preparation, it’s important to understand the impact of ingredients on both nutrition and safety. For example, a common question is, can you replace vegetable oil with olive oil? This is particularly relevant for those focusing on the health benefits and potential antimicrobial properties of olive oil in food preparation. By considering such substitutions, we can also align with broader public health goals of reducing unhealthy fats while maintaining food quality.
